Arsenal FC

Project Description

In the final stages of constructing its new home, Emirates Stadium, Arsenal FC required the fit-out of new offices for its 200 administrative staff, in an adjoining four-storey building. The brief called for a clear expression of the club's new direction that could also celebrate its past, but the practicalities of the project – a design-and-build contract on a tight timeline and budget – made it a challenge to deliver quality or innovation.

We needed an imaginative but cost efficient solution – one that Overbury, the contractor, could deliver to a tight schedule. We imagined each floor as a stage set where large-scale graphics and lighting would play an important role in dramatizing the space, just like in a theatre or a football stadium, for that matter. “Faced with floor plans that were long and linear, we created a central spine, a kind of architectural promenade, like a footballer dribbling down field, moving from left to right and back, creating 'incidents' along the way such as break out spaces, informal meeting spaces and hot-desking niches.
