Palazzo Van Axel

Project Description

Restoration, refurbishment and conversion of a Grade I listed building located next to the Church of Miracles in Venice.

One of the most important surviving Gothic residences in Venice, this 15th century palace is to be converted into large scale apartments. The aim has been to maintain the integrity of the building, minimise the impact on the historic fabric, and allow the beauty of the architecture to serve as a theatrical backdrop to contemporary living.

The apartments have been designed to allow the existing building to breathe and read as a whole, so that the existing fabric and individual rooms and spaces are left largely untouched. New elements - set pieces and rooms within rooms - will sit within the spaces, promoting the impression that the occupants are living in the palazzo building in its entirety, rather than a small isolated part of it.
